The job

Student accommodation uses power steadily all day and most of the night. Hot water, lifts, laundry, corridor lights and air conditioning are always running, so nearly everything the panels make gets used in the building instead of being sold back to the grid at a lower rate.

A concrete tower is harder to work with than a warehouse. There is one roof over a lot of floors, so you cannot fit a huge array, and the cable runs from the roof down to the switchboard are long. We sized this one to cover as much of the building's constant background usage as the roof would allow.

System details

System size
70 kW
Location
Southport, Gold Coast

Modelled from the installed system size at 1,530 kWh per kWp a year in Queensland, 18 cents per kWh blended across self-consumption and export, $850 per kW installed after certificates, and 0.7 kg of CO2e a kWh for the Queensland grid. Your own figures depend on your tariff, your roof and how much power you use during daylight, which is what the site assessment is for.
