Current policy change (announced 5 August 2026)

The Australian federal government has announced that the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES) will be expanded from 100kW to 1MW, allowing commercial solar systems up to ten times larger to claim the upfront small-scale technology certificate rebate instead of ongoing large-scale certificates. The government estimates the change reduces upfront installation costs by around 20 per cent, giving worked examples of about $68,000 off a 250kW system and about $136,000 off a 500kW system. It is expected to commence from 1 October 2026, subject to the necessary regulations being in place, so as at the date below it is an announced change rather than law already in effect. Systems under 100kW are unaffected and keep the rebate available today. The scheme is federal and administered by the Clean Energy Regulator.
